Ukrainian national team defender Ilya Zabarnyi has spoken about his expectations ahead of Euro 2024, emphasizing both the honour and immense responsibility of representing Ukraine during such tumultuous times.

Emotions Run High for Zabarnyi

The 21-year-old, participating in his second European Championship, shared his sentiments in a heartfelt statement. "This is my second European Championship. It's a great honour to represent Ukraine," noted Zabarnyi. The current situation in Ukraine, marred by conflict, indeed adds a different weight to their participation compared to previous tournaments.

"Everyone knows what times we are living through in Ukraine. I feel an incredible sense of responsibility, but I am not worried about my performance. Both in football and in life, I've been through a lot. The fact that I am here now is thanks to our soldiers protecting Ukraine."

The War's Impact on the Pitch

The looming conflict in Ukraine inevitably casts a shadow over the team's preparations and mindset. "There is a big difference compared to the last Euro because now we have a full-scale war in our country," he said. The weight of concern for their loved ones' safety is ever-present, but it also serves as a powerful motivation for the team.

"You always think about your loved ones being safe. This undoubtedly adds pressure on each of us, but it also motivates us to do our best on the pitch."

A Tough Opening Match Against Romania

Ukraine kicks off their Euro 2024 campaign against Romania on Monday, 17th June, at 16:00 Kyiv time. Zabarnyi is mindful of the challenges ahead, "In my opinion, Romania has good attacking players. They have a team with experienced and strong individual performers." Yet, the defender remains confident in Ukraine's preparedness and unity.

"Seeing Ukrainian flags in the stadium and knowing what is happening at home is indescribable. Each day is tough; people die every day. I thank everyone who supports us and gives us the opportunity to play. This is important not just for Ukrainian football but for lives."

Team Spirit and Cold-Blooded Execution

Zabarnyi stressed the importance of teamwork and emotional composure as they approach their matches. "Before the match, there will be an emotional moment, but we need to stay cool-headed and give our all on the field," he stated. He praised the team's quality and belief in their unity.

"I believe we have a quality squad with players capable of making a difference. But the most crucial thing is that we play as one team."

Ukraine's group also includes Slovakia and Belgium, promising a series of intense and high-stakes encounters. The team's performance will undoubtedly resonate deeply not just with their fans but with the entire nation.
