Luka Modric from Zadar, Croatia, has a reputation that can even make the bogeyman tremble. A football legend, Modric has proven time and again that he can lead both his club and national team to the pinnacle of success. In Spain’s Euro debut, he will be the player that Spanish midfielders will need to keep a close eye on.

Modric: The Midfield Maestro

Rodrigo, who will most often face off against the Real Madrid star, shared his thoughts:

“Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic... I think their strongest area is the midfield,” said Rodrigo.

Interestingly, Rodrigo has encountered Modric more frequently than any other player in his career, recording 9 victories, 4 draws, and 5 losses.

Modric’s Role on the Field

“Luka is clearly a reference point, the captain, and the source of all play. When you have a player of that profile, you must stay close and know how to block him,” Rodrigo emphasized.

Grimaldo is another Spaniard who will frequently battle against the Croatian number 10. Modric is renowned for his diagonals from the center out, a move that Grimaldo will have to neutralize effectively.

“He’s a player to watch, we know his importance. He has made history for Madrid,” Grimaldo acknowledged.

Morata, who shared the locker room with Modric during three seasons at Madrid, also had high praise:

“Modric is one of the best that football has seen.”

However, he added with confidence,

“But we will be motivated too, and it will be tough for both sides.”

Historical Performance

Modric has not had the best of luck when facing Spain. The last two encounters between Croatia and Spain ended in Spanish victories on penalties, first in the Euro 2021 round of 16 and then last year in the Nations League final. Prior to these, Modric faced Spain four times, resulting in one win and three losses, including a 6-0 defeat in 2018. Today, Modric has a chance to improve that record.

Spain is well aware of Modric’s capabilities, and they are fully prepared for what’s to come.
