Yuki Ishikawa, the Japanese volleyball sensation, has inked a two-year deal with Sir Susa Vim Perugia, the reigning champions in both Italy and the world. After spending four impressive seasons with Allianz Milan, the 28-year-old outside hitter is set to don the jersey of one of the most formidable teams on the planet.
A New Star for Perugia
Yuki Ishikawa brings a wealth of experience and talent to Perugia, having played for several top clubs in the Italian SuperLega. His journey began with Parmareggio Modena in the 2014-2015 season, where he clinched the Coppa Italia title. After a stint back in Japan, he returned to Italy, playing for Top Volley Latina, Emma Villas Siena, and Kioene Padova before joining Allianz Milan.
Filling Big Shoes
Ishikawa faces the daunting task of replacing Wilfredo Leon, a Cuban-born star who has been a cornerstone for Perugia over the past six seasons. Standing at 1.92 meters, Ishikawa will also contend with strong internal competition from Ukraine’s Oleh Plotnytskyi and Poland’s Kamil Semeniuk.
"It is a very strong team that won everything this year," Ishikawa stated. "I thought that Perugia was the perfect team for me. I wanted to come here and I chose to wear the shirt of this great club."
Reuniting with Lorenzetti
One of the exciting aspects of this move is Ishikawa's reunion with Angelo Lorenzetti, his first coach in Italy. The two first worked together when Ishikawa was just 19 years old at Modena.
"I arrive in a team that plays very well, with great consistency, and which has very strong players on its squad," Ishikawa continued. "I am very happy to play on his team again. I would like to show him that I have grown a lot here in Italy since I was 19."
Looking Forward
Before the next season starts, Ishikawa has his sights set on leading the Japanese national team in the 2024 Volleyball Nations League and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His impressive record includes being the best scorer and spiker of all time in the VNL, with numerous individual accolades to his name.
"The Italian league is always very difficult. Winning is tough. It is certainly the best championship in the world. The level is very high. All the teams are strong and there are many great players," Ishikawa remarked. "From next season, I will have [the Pala Barton fans] on my side and I am very happy. They will give me energy, confidence and emotion. I can't wait to play next year at the Pala Barton with these fans."
This move marks a significant chapter in Ishikawa's illustrious career, promising thrilling matches and high stakes as he joins the elite ranks of Perugia.
